Welcome
Knaresborough is a year round tourist base for those visiting this glorious region of Yorkshire and for the increasing numbers drawn to the undeniable and historic charms of Knaresborough itself, including the weekly market which dates back to 1310, and where at the Market Tavern, the weary traveller may still rest his head but now in a comfortable en-suite room with beverage making facilities, colour television and central heating! Quite a change from centuries past when Knaresborough became birthplace to Blind Jack, a virtuoso violinist, road builder and smuggler, Hugh de Morville, leader of the gang that murdered Thomas a Beckett and, most famous of all, the prophetess, Mother Shipton.
Born in 1488, Mother Shipton lived in Knaresborough in her famous cave and prophesised the Great Fire of London, her own death and incredibly, in the sixteenth century foretold:-
"Carriages without horses shall go.
And accidents fill the world with woe.
Around the world thoughts shall fly
In the twinkling of an eye...
Under water men shall walk,
Shall ride, shall sleep, shall talk"
It is the riding, sleeping and talking people (!) who we concentrate on at The Market Tavern and what Mother Shipton failed to prophesy is that, currently, the finest value, most conveniently situated accommodation in Knaresborough is to be found here where good food and drink is on offer to today’s wayfarer in clean, friendly, comfortable surroundings followed by reasonably priced accommodation in attractive en-suite bedrooms. If you seek value for money, comfortable en-suite accommodation in the centre of beautiful and historic Knaresborough, we prophesy a happy conclusion at The Market Tavern.
